ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 (COVID) pandemic forced changes in how medical curricula are organized and delivered. In addition to disease mitigation strategies, other curricular modifications were required to maintain educational effectiveness and student and faculty safety. While these changes appear to be successful in their primary goal, their effect on learning and other important educational outcomes is less well understood. We describe changes to our anatomy course and describe their effects on summative examination scores. We compared anatomy examination scores from 4 years prior to COVID with scores from the 2 years following COVID mandated changes in an effort to determine the effectiveness of our course modifications. Examination scores for the first of four successive Blocks of instruction following the implementation of curricular changes demonstrated a lower mean score and greater range of scores than for the four pre-COVID years. Pre-COVID and post-COVID scores for Blocks II, III, and IV were comparable. Our results indicate that our changes to the anatomy curriculum did not prevent a performance decline during the first Block of instruction only. However, students were able to successfully adapt to these changes during the remainder of the course. We discuss factors that may have accounted for the Block I performance decline and call attention to changes within the larger curriculum that may have affected student performance.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This paper seeks to: provide an overview of the impacts of and responses to the spread of COVID-19 in Ireland; assess the vulnerability of the population living in rural areas to COVID-19; compare the health status of male farmers to underlying medical conditions frequently associated with those experiencing the worst impacts of the illness; and assess the implications of COVID-19 for farmers living alone and farm households with children. Methods: We present an overview of the impact and response to COVID-19 through the use of public health statistics and reference to policy documents. We subsequently draw on the results of ongoing geographic and health research to present an overview of the impacts and potential implications of COVID-19. Results: The population of many rural areas and farmers in particular are highly vulnerable to adverse outcomes to COVID-19 infection. Single person farm households are at particular risk of isolation, whilst those families with children are at increased risk of stress. Conclusions: There is an urgent need to address both COVID-19 challenges and the health and wellbeing issues confronting farmers and farm families arising out of the current pandemic by supporting these populations adopt and sustain health behaviour changes, improve their wellbeing and develop the resources that support resilience.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how a new cross-community leadership team came together, collaborated, coordinated across academic units with external community partners, and executed a joint mission to address the unmet clinical need for medical face shields during these unprecedented times. Key aspects of this success include the ability to forge and leverage new opportunities, overcome challenges, adapt to changing constraints, and serve the significant need across the Philadelphia region and healthcare systems. We teamed to design-build durable face shields (AJFlex Shields). This was accomplished by high-volume manufacturing via injection molding and by 3-D printing the key headband component that supports the protective shield. Partnering with industry collaborators and civic-minded community allies proved to be essential to bolster production and deliver approximately 33,000 face shields to more than 100 organizations in the region. Our interdisciplinary team of engineers, clinicians, product designers, manufacturers, distributors, and dedicated volunteers is committed to continuing the design-build effort and providing Drexel AJFlex Shields to our communities.
